Forts Of Goa

 Aguada Fort

Situated eighteen kms from Panaji and settled on a natural elevation of the stream Mandovi, this fort was engineered by the Portuguese in 1609-1612, to command entry into the stream so as shield previous province from potential enemy attacks. A spring among the fort provided facility to the ships that known as there, giving it the name “Aguada” (meaning ‘water’ in Portguese). The fort, at present, homes the Central Jail. A nineteenth century beacon is settled within the defense.

The southern most Goan fort is settled concerning twenty five kms. south of Margao. This ancient defense, currently in ruins, was engineered before the arrival of the Portuguese. A read from the boat offers a homesick expertise.

Cabo dominion Niwas

Built in 1540 AD opposite Fort Aguada on the south natural elevation of the stream Mandovi, this defense housed the elegant Franciscan cloister that later (1954 AD) became the official residence of the govt of province. once Goa’s liberation in 1961, it became the residence of succeeding Governors of province. It commands a panoramic read of the sea and Mandovi stream and incorporates a splendid church at the sting of the drop-off.

Chapora Fort

Adil Shah of Iran of Bijapur engineered this fort on the southern natural elevation of the Chapora stream. it had been referred to as Shapur and is currently in ruins. it\'s a commanding read of Vagator beach.

Mormugao Fort

This fort close to the internationally notable Mormugao Habour was engineered to guard the harbour settled close to Vasco prosecutor Gama city. Its work started in 1624. It once lined a district of six miles in circumference, contained a high bulwark, 3 magazines, 5 prisons, a chapel and quarters for the guard but, aside from the chapel and a little of the boundary wall, very little is left of this fort.

This fort was engineered by Hindu rulers and later confiscated by the Portuguese.
